Truth Advertising Newsletter 3 Tips to Effectively Speak to the Un-Churched by John Squiric, Truth Advertising |
When you send a direct mail piece to the people in your community the goal should not be to reach those already plugged into a church home. The goal must be to reach the unchurched. In other words, we don’t want to simply entice disgruntled believers to slide over to yet another church (you probably don’t want those people anyway). Rather, we desire to entice those non-believers and backsliders who aren’t plugged into a believing church to come home to Christ and see how the Church can be a blessing to them and their needs. So how do you do that effectively? How do you speak to them in a way that touches the very center of their being? Certainly that’s the job of The Holy Spirit – to convict them of sin and to bring them to Christ. Yet at the same time God instructs us to be wise and add persuasiveness to our speech when communicating with unbelievers. He who is wise wins souls and that’s what we are all about here at Truth Advertising… helping you win souls by first attracting the unchurched so they can then come visit the one place where we know they can meet Christ- your church! Here are 3 tips to help you do that more effectively. Tip #1 Engage people on their turf - not yours. This means that we begin our communication with them - before they ever enter the church doors. As the saying goes… “before you can speak to people you must first gain a hearing”. An effective postcard allows you to do that in a non-confrontational way from the comfort of their own homes. Tip #2 Speak to their questions and unmet, felt needs – not your programs. The biggest reason people don’t attend church is that they believe it is not relevant to their lives. Our job is to show them that God has the answer, solution or comfort to whatever problem they may be experiencing in life. Don’t bore people by droning on and on about how great your church is. Rather, address their needs and touch the sore spot in their lives. They are more likely to listen to that message and postcards are a great way to get that message across. Tip #3 Commit to the long haul in communicating your message Old habits are hard to break and newer ones are difficult to form. If a person is currently unchurched you need to realize that it may take The Holy Spirit some time to get them to visit your Church. That’s why we say you should send out postcards several times a year because often it will not be the first postcard you send that will get people to respond. I’ve heard lots of stories of people who have saved postcard after postcard, oftentimes for years, before they finally decided to respond and actually get up the courage to come visit the Church. If we sow sparingly we will reap sparingly; if we sow generously we will reap generously. In all of our efforts we must keep sight of this principle. We can’t use the “sprinkle” method to get the word out about the benefits the Church has to offer. We must intentionally and diligently sow the seeds that will reap the harvest for the Kingdom. One of the things we are most proud of here at Truth Advertising is that because of our low prices, Churches all across the country can send great full color, attention grabbing postcards to more people for less money. We’d like to help you maximize your advertising dollars
